Proverbs and idioms
Lately I’ve been really into reading proverbs and idioms and trying to understand them and their origins. Where does one draw the line between a proverb and an idiom?
Here are a couple that pick my interest for various reasons…
- Kill two birds with one stone.
- Out of sight… Out of mind.
- Up the duff [eds. note: LOL]
- The only free cheese is in the mouse trap.
- Slower than molasses
- Curiosity killed the cat. Satisfaction brought it back.
- It’s better to be pissed off than pissed on.
- It’s the real McCoy.
- It says if you sneeze once, it means someone is praising you; If you sneeze twice, it means someone is criticizing you/saying bad things about you; If you sneeze three times, it means you are being scolded; And if you sneeze four times or more, well, it means you have a cold.
