Book Review: Middlesex
This is step one in my attempt to read all of the Pulitzer Prize winning fiction novels this summer. I may or may not go in reverse chronological order, however I’m setting a poor standard already by jumping down to 2003….
Middlesex
Jeffery Eugenidies
Pulitzer Prize 2003
Normally I am not a fan of multi-generational novels, which seem so prevalent in bookstores today. That being said, Middlesex is able to pull of this genre without confusing the reader or losing pace.
The story is of Calliope and the Stephanides family, from the start of their misfortunes in a small Greek village, to the early 2000s when Calliope is an adult.
There is great character development and while certain characters are featured in each “book” of the novel, Calliope is the central narrator which gives the book good flow. There are unexpected reveals and twists making the book surprising and fun.
Overall 4/5… next for me is The Road by Cormac McCarthy
